What are Varicose Veins ?

Veins are blood vessels that return deoxygenated blood from the outer parts of the body back to the heart and lungs. When these veins become abnormally thick, full of twists and turns or enlarged, they are called varicose veins. This Varicose veins can form anywhere in the body, but they are mostly occurs in the legs.

Symptoms

1. Prominent dark blue blood vessels
2. Bulging or twisting of the affected vein
3.Aching of the affected area, especially after sitting or standing for lengthy periods
4. Swelling in the legs
5. A feeling of heaviness and muscle fatigue in the legs
6. Itching around the affected veins
7. Leg cramps at rest

Cause

Veins push blood through valves which alternately open and close. Surrounding muscles help in this blood flow. When there is a chronic increase in blood pressure, the vein gets dilated and the vein walls are pushed apart. The valves cannot seal properly or failed to close properly and the muscles find it difficult to push the blood forward. The blood begins accumulated in the veins causing them to bulge and contort. In other words, Varicose veins are caused by weakened valves and veins in your legs.
