PROSTATE
Prostate is a small gland specific to men, located beneath the urinary bladder and wrapped around the urethra. Urethra is a tube that carries urine from the bladder to the penis and on out of the body. Prostate gland produces the milky white prostatic fluid that helps carry and nourishing sperm. It secretes at the time of ejaculation, which is alkaline in nature and also helps to neutralize the acidic environment of the vagina. Therefore, it is helpful to sperm for surviving after ejaculation.
BPH or ENLARGEMENT of PROSTATE
BPH refers to benign prostatic hyperplasia (increase in the number of cells) or hypertrophy (increase in cell size), the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. As men grows older there is an abnormal increase in prostatic cells (two out of three males), which makes pressure on urethra at the base of the urinary bladder causing painful urination.
Untreated prostate gland enlargement can block the flow of urine out of the bladder and can cause bladder, urinary tract or kidney problems.
Prostate gland enlargement varies in severity among men and tends to gradually worsen over time. Prostate gland enlargement symptoms include :
1. Frequent or urgent need to urinate
2. Burning with urination and a discharge from the penis
3. Sensation of fullness behind the scrotum and in front of the rectum
4. A thin stream of urine which stops and starts rather than a full stream of urine
5. Straining while urinating
6. Not being able to completely empty the bladder or Urine retention
7. Dribbling at the end of urination
8. Lower back and thigh pain
9. Urinary tract infection
10. Formation of stones in the bladder
11. Reduced kidney function
CAUSES
The causes of prostate enlargement are not yet fully known, but are probably associated with the ageing process and dihydrotestosterone, a male hormone. Experts believe that dihydrotestosterone spurs the prostate's growth in adulthood.
Natural Ways to Reduce Prostate Enlargement
Consult a doctor as soon as symptoms appear. In particular, see a doctor if your symptoms cause distress, are associated with abdominal pain, or if the urine is blood-stained. Once symptoms develop, they remain persistent. Without medical attention, the condition may worsen and cause distress.
Try to avoid medications and other substances that aggravate the condition. These can include alcohol, medications used to treat depression or Parkinson's disease, some heart drugs, and certain cough and cold remedies.
These other self-care tips may be of benefit.
